A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu wields significant influence over the Social Democratic Party (SDP), cautioning political actors against underestimating his grip on the party.
Igbokwe’s statement follows the high-profile defection of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, from the APC to the SDP. El-Rufai, in a statement on Monday, cited dissatisfaction with the current leadership of the ruling party as the reason for his departure.
Reacting to this political shift, Igbokwe took to his official Facebook page to warn presidential hopefuls eyeing the 2027 elections under the SDP banner.
“If indeed SDP is still alive and kicking in Nigeria, then know the truth and have inner peace: PBAT is the owner. Ignore him to your own peril,” Igbokwe asserted.
He further emphasized President Tinubu’s historical connection to the SDP, recalling that Tinubu was a senator under the party in 1993 during the era of the late Chief MKO Abiola.
“Go and investigate and verify. He is the owner of SDP,” Igbokwe added.
With the 2027 elections on the horizon, political analysts suggest that El-Rufai’s defection and Igbokwe’s remarks could reshape the opposition landscape, fueling speculations about Tinubu’s broader political strategy
