Shock and fear gripped residents of Temidire Zone 4, Egbejila area of Ilorin, Kwara State capital, following the gruesome murder of a 39-year-old pregnant woman, Mrs. Esther Enemo.
The victim, wife of a trader in agricultural chemicals, was discovered brutally dismembered in the bush behind her residence on Thursday. Body parts were later recovered in a sack dumped beneath a nearby bridge, while her head was still missing as at press time.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the prime suspect, identified as 29-year-old Sylvester Enemo, the younger brother of the victim’s husband, was seen leaving the house at dawn carrying a black nylon bag dripping with blood. A trail from the bag reportedly led to the scene of the shocking discovery.
Residents revealed that the deceased had been alone at home on the night of the incident. She was last seen buying bottles of beer and plates of pepper soup, raising speculations that she might have been expecting a visitor before tragedy struck.
The chilling murder has sparked fears of ritual motives and stirred ethnic suspicions in the multi-tribal community.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested the suspect after receiving a report of foul play.
“The dismembered body of Mrs. Esther Enemo was discovered in the bush behind her residence. Further search led to the recovery of other parts concealed in a sack and dumped beneath a nearby bridge. A suspect, one Mr. Sylvester Enemo, younger brother to the victim’s husband, has been arrested in connection with the crime,” the statement read.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi, has since ordered a full-scale investigation, assuring that justice will be served. He also urged residents to remain calm and refrain from spreading speculative comments that could incite tension.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) morgue for autopsy, while police patrols and surveillance have been reinforced across the State
