Abe specifically called out House of Representatives member Ikenga Ugochinyere, who has persistently questioned the validity of the seats held by the defected Rivers lawmakers. He accused Ugochinyere of hypocrisy, pointing out that he sits alongside defected members in the House of Representatives without raising objections.
“Look at Ugochinyere, he sits in the House of Reps. Every day, beside him are members who defected. He has never stood up to move a motion that a particular person who left the Labour Party last week can no longer sit there. But when he steps out of that chamber, he suddenly claims that Rivers lawmakers who defected should lose their seats. That is pure rubbish,” Abe asserted.
The former senator further emphasized that in Nigeria’s political history, lawmakers who defect to align with the leadership rarely lose their seats. He referenced past instances, such as the defection of Ebonyi State House of Assembly members to the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that none of them lost their seats.
“Anybody familiar with Nigerian politics knows that no lawmaker who defects to the side of the leadership loses his seat. We were all here when Ebonyi House of Assembly members defected to APC. Did any of them lose their seats?” Abe questioned.
His remarks come amid heightened political tensions in Rivers State, where the defection of lawmakers has sparked controversy over the legitimacy of their seats and the overall stability of the state legislature.
