The Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday, personally supervised the demolition of illegal structures obstructing the construction of Arterial Road N16 in Gishiri village, Katampe District, Abuja.
Speaking at the site, Wike reiterated the government’s commitment to completing the road project by the end of May and warned against any attempts to sabotage developmental efforts. He revealed that residents had been given sufficient notice and offered compensation alongside alternative relocation arrangements, but they refused to cooperate.
“We served them with the eviction notice and explained the need for them to cooperate so that the contractor, CGC, can complete this road project on time,” Wike stated. “The traditional ruler requested a one-week extension, which was granted. Despite assurances of compensation and relocation, they have continued to obstruct the project.”
The Minister emphasized that the road project was in the public interest and not for private development. He warned that the FCT Administration would no longer tolerate delays caused by individuals unwilling to comply with government policies.
“Enough time has been given. Are we going to abandon a crucial project because of a few people? No. We have given them more than two, three months. I cannot fold my hands and let the job stop,” Wike declared.
He urged affected residents to cooperate with the FCT Department of Resettlement and Compensation to facilitate their relocation.
The demolition exercise underscores the FCTA’s resolve to push forward with critical infrastructural projects aimed at improving the Federal Capital Territory’s road network and urban development.
