Former President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated his total commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC), dismissing speculations about his stance on recent political shifts.
In a statement released on Thursday by his spokesman, Mallam Garba Shehu, Buhari made it clear that he remains a steadfast member of the ruling party and has no plans to abandon the political platform that enabled his two-term presidency.
“I am an APC member, and I like to be addressed as such. I will try to popularise the party by all means,” Buhari affirmed.
His declaration comes amid significant political developments, including the recent defection of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). El-Rufai’s move has fueled speculations, with some suggesting that he had Buhari’s backing.
However, Buhari’s latest statement dispels such claims, reinforcing his commitment to the APC. He expressed deep appreciation for the party’s support throughout his tenure and emphasized that he seeks no special favours in return.
He also highlighted the sacrifices made by the founding fathers of the APC in strengthening democracy and constitutional governance in Nigeria.
“The pains taken by the founding fathers of the party to establish a strong party to protect our constitution and democracy as a system of government are worthy sacrifices that should be cherished and nurtured,” he said.
Buhari’s reassurance is expected to stabilize internal party tensions and reinforce confidence among APC members amid ongoing discussions about the party’s future direction.
