In a remarkable achievement, 24-year-old Sumayyah Abdallah has emerged as the top-performing medical graduate for the 2022/2023 academic session at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS). This outstanding achievement was celebrated at the medical students' induction ceremony held at the university's auditorium on Saturday, December 9, 2023. Sumayyah not only secured the coveted title but also clinched an impressive twenty-three awards, along with cash prizes.
The journey to this accolade began in December 2015 when Sumayyah, originally from Agaie, Niger state, embarked on her medical education. Over the course of eight years, she displayed exceptional dedication and academic prowess. Out of the 140 students who initiated this academic journey, only 79 successfully graduated and were inducted into the medical profession.
Despite becoming a mother in 2021 and giving birth just three weeks before her UG5 examinations, Sumayyah's commitment to excellence remained unwavering. In fact, she credits her marriage for positively impacting her studies, providing increased motivation and focus. At the induction ceremony, Sumayyah was not only honored with awards but also received more than four hundred thousand naira (N400,000) in recognition of her outstanding achievements.
Sumayyah emphasized that her success was attributed to consistently earning high grades rather than relying on Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) for her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) pursuit. Expressing her joy, she stated, "Alhamdulillah, I feel really happy. Seeing the smiles on my parents’ faces and their tears of joy is the most satisfying feeling in the whole wide world." This inspiring story of academic triumph and perseverance was initially shared on the Facebook page of Mr. Abdulraheem Saad Dembo.
