Amid growing political speculations, key stakeholders of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), including Senator Saliu Mustapha and other influential figures, have distanced themselves from any planned coalition against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The group, led by former Nasarawa State Governor, Senator Tanko Al-Makura, made their position clear after a strategic meeting held at his Abuja residence on Wednesday. This comes in response to recent reports hinting at a possible alliance with former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, aimed at undermining Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
In a joint statement signed by Al-Makura, former Katsina Governor Bello Masari, Senator Saliu Mustapha, and 21 other prominent CPC figures, the group declared their unwavering commitment to the APC and its current leadership.
“We, the undersigned leaders and dedicated members of the former Congress for Progressive Change, reaffirm our loyalty to our great party and express strong solidarity with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” the statement read.
They dismissed what they described as “mischievous narratives” suggesting internal discontent or defection plans, insisting that the CPC bloc remains a foundational pillar of the APC and has no intention of abandoning the party.
Reiterating their role in building a progressive political platform, the signatories emphasized their resolve to protect the legacy of the APC.
“We take pride in the sacrifices made to foster national unity, justice, and development. We will not allow any individual or group to derail the progress we have made,” they stated.
In a show of support for Tinubu's policies, the group praised his economic reforms, urging Nigerians to be patient as the benefits of these initiatives begin to manifest.
“These policies may be tough, but they are necessary steps to rebuild our economy and ensure a brighter future,” they added.
Acknowledging internal grievances within the APC, the CPC stakeholders encouraged affected members to utilize proper party channels for redress, rather than resorting to public agitation.
The statement also called on the APC leadership to enhance communication and engagement across all levels to sustain party unity and stability.
“We therefore reaffirm our loyalty to the APC and our steadfast support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. The CPC family remains a vital pillar of the party and will continue to play a responsible role in its progress and Nigeria’s development,” the communique concluded.
Other notable signatories include former Education Minister Malam Adamu Adamu, Okoi Okono-Obla, Sen. Mustapha Salihu, Waziri Bulama, and Jerry Johnson.
