The transformers, a 300KVA unit provided by the Ilorin South Local Government and a 500KVA unit donated by Senator Saliu Mustapha, were reportedly taken away without prior notice, leaving residents in darkness once again.
According to news posted on Sobi FM page, the residents of the area for nearly two years, the community had been cut off from the national grid following the breakdown of its transformer. Appeals to the government for assistance went unanswered until February 13, 2025, when the council chairman facilitated the installation of a 300KVA transformer. However, due to its limited capacity, residents continued to experience erratic supply.
The situation improved significantly when Senator Mustapha, representing Kwara Central, intervened with the donation of a 500KVA transformer, ensuring a more stable power supply to the entire community.
But the relief was short-lived as the local government chairman allegedly led a team of operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS), police officers, and suspected political thugs to forcibly remove both transformers.
Residents have condemned the action as an abuse of power and an act of political sabotage.
"Even if the chairman wanted to retrieve the 300KVA transformer he provided, what justification does he have for taking the 500KVA transformer donated by Senator Mustapha?" a concerned resident queried.
The community described the move as “a deliberate attack on the people,” vowing to resist what they termed an act of oppression.
They have called on Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to intervene and ensure the immediate return of the transformers. They are also demanding a probe by the Kwara State House of Assembly and urging civil society organizations and the media to expose the alleged injustice.
The residents further warned that if their demands are ignored, they will pursue legal action, petition higher authorities, and escalate the matter nationally.
