In a major political shake-up, former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has officially parted ways with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
El-Rufai, in a statement released today, confirmed his resignation from the ruling party, citing dissatisfaction with the APC’s direction over the past two years. He emphasized that the party’s leadership had failed to address growing internal issues, leading him to seek a platform more aligned with his progressive ideals.
“I have formally resigned my membership of the APC today, March 10, 2025. After extensive consultations with my mentors, colleagues, and supporters, I have decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for future political engagements,” El-Rufai announced.
The former governor lamented the decline of APC’s democratic principles, stating that the party had deviated from the vision of its founding members. Despite his contributions to APC’s victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023, he expressed disappointment over what he described as a lack of respect for party structures and members.
Reflecting on his tenure in Kaduna, El-Rufai highlighted his administration’s efforts in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and investment attraction. However, he noted that such achievements now hold little significance in an APC that has, in his words, “castrated its organs and treated its members with contempt.”
Looking ahead, El-Rufai declared his commitment to strengthening the SDP and uniting opposition forces against the APC. “I urge all Nigerians who care about the country’s future to join us in the SDP as we work towards building a stronger, more progressive Nigeria,” he stated.
His defection is expected to significantly alter the political landscape, setting the stage for a major opposition challenge in the 2027 elections.
