Kwara State Governor Appoints Prof. Oba Abu to Lead the Charge for New State University of Education

Kwara State Governor Appoints Prof. Shuaib Oba Abdulraheem to Lead the Charge for a State University of Education

In a significant move towards advancing education in Kwara State, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has taken a decisive step by appointing a prominent figure to spearhead the establishment of the Kwara State University of Education. The former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Shuaib Oba Abdulraheem (OFR), has been named as the chairman of the study, planning, and implementation committee for this pivotal project.

The 11-member committee includes Deacon Pastor Afolayan J. Babatunde as the Secretary, along with distinguished individuals such as Professor (Mrs) Medinat Salman, Prof. (Mrs) Sidikat F. Adeyemi, Prof. Umar Gunu, Engineer Sa’ad Belgore, Mrs. Mulikat Lawal, Femi Aina, former Special Adviser on Special Duties Alhaji Abubakar Abdul-Razaq Jiddah, and representatives from the Ministries of Housing and Urban Development and Justice, the latter being a female member.

This bold initiative is set to leverage one of the existing Colleges of Education as the launchpad for the new University of Education. Simultaneously, the state is working towards having one of the Colleges of Education adopted as a Federal College of Education in Abuja, while another College will operate in dual-mode, enabling it to confer bachelor’s degrees in accordance with recent legislation governing Colleges of Education in Nigeria.

The primary responsibility of the 11-member committee is to meticulously design the framework for the university's establishment, functionality, and financial sustainability. They will also be tasked with developing a strong case for the necessity of a state-owned specialized university of education. This includes assessing the existing conventional colleges or universities that offer non-degree programs (NCE/Diploma) and ensuring they meet the criteria for automatic registration with the Teachers’ Registration Council.

This strategic move is poised to transform the educational landscape in Kwara State and enhance the quality of teacher education. It signifies a significant step forward in advancing the state's commitment to providing quality education to its citizens.
