The relief materials distributed include hundreds of mattresses, pillows, blankets, footwear, wrappers, and insecticide-treated mosquito nets. Minister Edu also assured the 480,000 unregistered IDPs that the Federal government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, is dedicated to addressing their needs and eradicating poverty, in collaboration with the state Government.
She pledged to extend federal government programmes such as the social register, conditional cash transfers, and other social interventions to these IDPs. Dr. Edu expressed optimism that these relief items would alleviate the difficult living conditions faced by the IDPs and emphasized the government's commitment to providing lasting solutions for their well-being.
In her words, "Our goal is to lift everyone out of poverty and humanitarian crises, as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has committed. The President has directed us to reach Nigerians living on less than one dollar per day and elevate them from poverty. We will offer vocational training, support micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, and provide economic start-up capital to those who can return to their communities."
She further added, "For those who have lost family members, Mr. President assures you of resettlement in partnership with the State government and other development partners. President Tinubu has instructed me to convey his commitment to your reintegration into society."
Minister Edu expressed concern about the dire living conditions of the unregistered IDPs, mainly from Northern Borno, and emphasized the need to change their situation. She commended Governor Professor Zulum for his proactive efforts in addressing these challenges.
Hajia Zuwaira Gambo, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, who accompanied the Minister during her visit, highlighted the state government's ongoing support for IDPs and called on the Federal Government to complement their efforts. She also acknowledged the crucial role played by President Tinubu in addressing the humanitarian needs of IDPs in the state.
The Minister's visit to the IDP camp was joined by Ambassador Catherine Udida, the Acting Honourable Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and IDPs, along with other high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
